Born of wealthy merchants of the Orl tribe, Shuri's father, Malaqi, was killed by Garleans before he could reach his home safely to witness the birth of his only child; his wife, Altani, died giving birth to Shuri and the midwife fled as far as a neighboring village with the newborn in hopes of ensuring the child's survival. Two members of the tribe occupying the village--Declan and Agathe of the Angura--happened upon the midwife and, at the dying Xaela's behest, the couple took in the newborn to raise as their own.Shuri's childhood and early teenage years was spent in the Steppe--specifically within the glacial mountains the village was located--raised as a member of the Angura tribe by her foster parents. However, she grew up with no knowledge of her biological parents, as Declan and Agathe wanted to wait until she was a little older to tell her of her roots. Her only friend at the time was a Xaela youth named Yujin Kha, who was a few years older than Shuri and took on the role of a surrogate brother as the other children in their village were a bit afraid of Shuri due to her complete heterochromia (one eye was silver, the other blue) and her odd, starry scales. Throughout her young life, Shuri was taught how to dance by her foster mother and how to hunt and battle from her foster father; thus, she was slowly being prepared to take part in the Nadaam , a rite of passage for many young Xaela and a battle between the tribes to declare the new Khagan. On her twelfth winter, Shuri began to hear a voice calling out to her and yet she could not discern the source. When bringing the concern to her foster mother, Agathe had inquired Shuri if she was hearing the voice of Nhaama, the Dusk Mother. Shuri had responded with not being sure, but she was certain that Nhaama was not speaking to her. On the cusp of her teenage years, the Angura fell under assault by the Garlean Empire; Garlean soldiers swarmed the village in order to subjugate the Xaela. After witnessing a fellow Angura fall to a Garlean blade, Yujin and Shuri fled their village upon the back of Yujin's Yol. The two youths flew to Kugane before Yujin dismissed his Yol steed and he and Shuri quickly stowed away on a ship bound for Eorzea--as far from the reach of the Empire as they could get. The ship was bound for Limsa Lominsa, one of the Eorzean city-states and from there, the two then snuck aboard an airship bound for New Gridania in the Black Shroud. After arriving and settling in New Gridania, Shuri and Yujin attempted to make a living. Shuri took up weaving as Yujin tried his hand at being a merchant, selling wares and clothing that is often woven by Shuri. She continued to hear the strange voice, but was unsure of what to do until a few years later when both she and Yujin decided to try their hand at being adventurers, to traverse the realm. It was during that time that Shuri came to discover that the Mothercrystal, Hydaelyn was calling out to her, after being overcome with bouts of dizziness and having visions of Hydaelyn. As a result, it was soon discovered that Shuri possessed the Echo and that Hydaelyn had chosen her. Thus, her various exploits have earned her the title of "Warrior of Light".**************

-Each Starmaker is given a rank in the status of the Celestial Council. Shuri is known by her rank Asteria. The rank of Asteria is a third seat of the Celestials.-While the Starmakers are able to create and weave constellations in the night sky, the First Seat of the Celestials, Nox, is a rank below the Heavenly Three and is able to designate parts of the heavens where the other seat members can create their stars. The holder of the Nox position receives divine messages from the holder of the Night Throne (the moon) and does have a secondary say on who ascends the ranks within the Celestials.-The Celestial rank/seats are as follows: Nox (first seat); Baltis (second seat); Asteria (third seat); Zorya (fourth seat); Innana (fifth seat); Malara (sixth seat); The Lunar Throne (highest seat, the moon); The Solus Throne (2nd highest seat, the sun); The Terra Throne (third highest seat, the earth).-Each holder of the Celestial seats are forbidden to reveal their true names. To do so is to forfeit the seat and the Celestial to reveal their name will fall from the very heavens. It is a universal law that the true name is as intimate information. In the history of the Celestials, only three had revealed their true names (former holders of seats Zorya, Malara, and Baltis). The Celestials are held to the command that they can only reveal the seat names they hold.-In the same vein, a Starmaker can be “Tainted”. The Heavenly Three have not disclosed how it can be done and the Starmakers of all ranks know better than to question their decision.-The Heavenly Three and the Celestial Council are held to the highest of standards to the lower ranking Starmakers and even beings they encounter on other worlds. “The same Heavens stretch across all worlds,” the Heavenly Three had decreed, and thus the Starmakers must never deviate from the standard of which they are held.
Despite holding the seat of Asteria, Shuri is very curious of other worlds and also very cautious. She has heard tell of stories of the Fallen Celestials (those who revealed their true names or were Tainted) being tricked by beings from other worlds and keeps many secrets of the Starmakers hidden deep within her heart as decreed by the Heavenly Three.
-She often visits the realm belonging to the holder of the Terra throne (Earth) because she finds the beings that reside there fascinating. She often tries to stay hidden when witnessing the beings do their day-to-day activities, her inquiring mind wondering what it is like to not have to be a Starmaker for a day.
Shuri swore that she would never become one of the Fallen Celestials in all her centuries of living. Yet something–or someone–could change that…
